Elkin de Jesus Ramirez Jaramillo will be speaking at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1904 Winnebago on Friday, May 9. There will be a potluck supper at 6:00 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7:00 p.m. Elkin de Jesus Ramirez Jaramillo, a member of the Human Rights Organization, Corporacion Juridica Libertad, represents the peace community of San Jose de Apartado in northern Colombia that is a remarkable non-violent alternative to war. He will share this rural community's experience of resistance, perseverance and hope in the midst of the brutal conflict in Colombia.

Elkin is a co-founder of the Corporacion Juridica Libertad. Among his responsibilities are the defense of political prisoners and advising the Asociacion de Institutores de Antioquia (ADIDA), a 30,000 member teachers union, on Human Rights. Currently he is part of the team accompanying the Peace Community San Jose de Apartado in human rights questions. Aside from his important work as human rights defender he is a professor at the faculty of Constitutional Theory at the University of Antioquia.
