Subject: Interfaith peace service--May 11

FYI: This has long been in planning and looks to be a very uplifting, strengthening event. (I'm involved in a small way--reading part of a Wendell Berry poem.)

SUNDAY MAY 11 "We Are All One: Voices of Faith for Peace"

Let us join our voices in prayer and song. Members of all faiths and religious traditions are invited to an interfaith service for peace on Mothers Day, May 11, from 7-8:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 203 Wisconsin Ave., in downtown Madison.

The service will include song, prayer, poetry, chanting and silent meditation led by representatives from various faith congregations in Madison, including Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Native American and more. There will also be activities appropriate for children.

The event is being held on May 11 to commemorate the original intent of Mother's Day. The holiday was conceived in 1870 by the American poet Julia Ward Howe as a renunciation of war, militarism and patriarchy by women who had lost husbands and sons in the Civil War.

This spiritual observance is sponsored by Peace Witness, an interfaith collaboration. We share the conviction that our prayers and voices can make a difference.
