Circles of Support
The Prairie Denominational affairs committee is suggesting that Prairie members take part in a First Unitarian Society (FUS) interfaith gathering on Sept 23rd. We hope to make this part of our study this year on criminal justice and prison reform.

The FUS Social Justice Council has received a grant from the Unitarian Universalist funding program. The grant will support our work in the Circles of Support program of the Madison Area Urban Ministry. This program works with recently released prisoners of the Wisconsin prison system who are returning to the Madison area. The funded project includes hosting an interfaith gathering of 50 persons for a simulation exercise at First Society on Sept 23. The goal is development of interfaith circles of support from that gathering with each Circle including 5 or 6 individuals who will work with one recently released prisoner during the period of their parole, and the training of the circle members. The simulation exercise recreates the experience of the first month of a recently released prisoner. Each participant is given an identity and must spend the period of the simulation negotiating the requirements of parolees and overcoming the various barriers to success.

The program begins at 5:30 with a light dinner and a film "Today's Prisoners, Tomorrow's Neighbors" followed by the circles to try on the role of prisoners. To learn more about Circles of Support - call Wendy Cooper at FUS at 233-9774 ext 25 or email wendyc@fusmadison.org.
