NOT IN OUR NAME MADISON
PRESENTS AN EVENING OF MUSIC, READINGS AND TALK
ORPHEUM THEATER, JANUARY 28, 7PM

PLEASE JOIN US

"Let it not be said..."

Tuesday, January 28, 2003, Madison signatories of the NOT IN OUR NAME Statement of Conscience will present an evening of music, readings, and talk at the Orpheum Theatre, 216 State St., Madison, WI, 7-9 PM. Doors open at 6 PM. Admission is free.

The event follows on the heels of the December 21, 2002, publication of the NOT IN OUR NAME Statement of Conscience and names of over 500 signers in a full-page plus a quarter-page ad in The Capital Times and the Wisconsin State Journal.

"Let it not be said that people in the United States did nothing when their government declared a war without limit and instituted stark new measures of repression." The statement's comprehensive criticism of the Bush policies and call to resist marks a new phase in the national debate over the "war on terrorism" and its concomitant, if undeclared, "war on civil liberties."

The program is presented by the NOT IN OUR NAME Committee of Madison and supported by the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice and the Madison Area Peace Coalition, which combined, represent about 175 statewide and local organizations.

Musicians for the evening will be Oscar Brown Jr. (Chicago), Lou and Peter Berryman, Jan Wheaton, Will and Dot Williams, and the Doug Brown Band.

Four dramatic readings will be given by actors from American Players Theatre: Paul Bentzen, Sarah Day, and Jim DaVita.

The Statement of Conscience will be read, paragraph by paragraph, by elected leaders. Veterans and protesters of past U.S. wars will deliver the Pledge of Resistance.

One major speaker will be David McReynolds from New York City, where he has long been active in the War Resisters League. McReynolds has taken part in many protests and demonstrations over the years.

The other major speaker will be Madison's own nationally known Ed Garvey, tireless troublemaker for countless good causes.

Through music, skits, and words, the NOT IN OUR NAME Committee of Madison hopes to break people's sense of isolation in these trying times, giving all of us the courage to speak out, knowing we are not alone.

We want to send a loud, clear message to the Bush administration that their actions at home and abroad are "not in our name."

Come one, come all -- bring family, bring friends; round up groups, clubs, and associations.

Information tables may be set up in the hall behind the auditorium. No "open mike." Leafleting allowed. Press and media coverage encouraged.
