Oct 26: Madison Rally in Solidarity w/national March in DC

What: Stop the War! Solidarity Rally
Date: Saturday, October 26
Time: 12:00 pm
Place: State Street steps to the Capitol

Students and community members from throughout Wisconsin will be gathering at the State Street steps to the Capitol for a massive Anti-War Solidarity Protest. The purpose of the protest is twofold: to show staunch opposition to the Bush administration's plans to attack Iraq, and also to inform people about the events leading up to the current situation and the implications of a possible war. The protest will feature speakers followed by a Q&A session, allowing audience members to express their opinions and concerns. The keynote speaker will be Matt Rothschild, editor of the Progressive. In addition, Mary Layoun, a UW professor, Allen Ruff, long time author and activist, Alfred Meyer, Chair of the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice, and a representative from the Hillel Foundation will be speaking. The rally is expected to bring in thousands of supporters from all over the state.

The Madison protest is part of a unified day of action across the country. The A.N.S.W.E.R. group and the Not In Our Name group are organizing national protests in Washington D.C. and San Francisco on the 26th. The Madison protest is one of many that will be occurring throughout the United States in solidarity with theses national rallies. Three busloads of Madison students and community members are traveling to DC, and there will be live feed-ins from some of these members.

Background: Stop the War! started as the Student/Youth Caucus of the Madison Area Peace Coalition (MAPC), on September 25th 2001. The group's three points of unity are 1) Stop the war, 2) Defend human rights and civil liberties at home and abroad, and 3) Stop racial profiling and ethnic scapegoating.
